South African soccer received an exciting boost this week with the announcement that the Premier Soccer League and Betway ZA have signed a three-year sponsorship agreement. The agreement saw the league renamed to the Betway Premiership and much more.
While rugby and cricket get a lot of airtime on national and satellite television in South Africa, we all know that the king of local sports is soccer. Despite making its way to our sunny shores with the arrival of the British in the late nineteenth century, it is a sport that captured the country’s love of speed, technical proficiency, and perseverance and has a fan base that transcends culture, language, and socio-economic position.
A momentous checkmark in the history of South African soccer was the hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The event drew the eyes of the world to our gorgeous country and showcased our ability to host an astounding global sporting event.
The nation’s favourite sporting event was in the headlines again this week with the announcement of a new partnership agreement between the Premier Soccer League and Betway South Africa.

Founded in 1996, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) has a long history of driving innovation and performance excellence in South African soccer. An essential aspect of keeping soccer at the forefront of local sports is creating partnerships that generate much-needed revenue and exposure.
The latest of these partnerships is signing the world-renowned sportsbook Betway as the league's new sponsor. Chairman of the Premier Soccer League, Dr Irvin Khoza, commented on the agreement, saying:
“This is a massive boost for every lover of football in this country. Our partnership with Betway confirms our league’s standing as one of the best in the world and heralds a wonderful future for our game. Betway’s energy and enthusiasm will have an immediate impact across all facets of the game, and on behalf of the PSL, I am proud to welcome them on board as title sponsor and partner.”
Betway CEO Laurence Michel added his thoughts:
“Football is a fundamental part of South African life. It really is in our blood and has been for generations.”
Going on to add:
“We are incredibly proud to be the title partner of the Betway Premiership. It further demonstrates not only our respect for the history of the league but also our vision for the development of its future. The PSL aligns with our values as a brand that commonly champions great South African success stories.”
According to Michel, the South African online gambling provider is putting its money where its mouth is with the “single biggest investment in South African sport”. The agreement will see Betway invest around R900 million (£38 million) into the soccer league over the next three years.
One question raised by people unfamiliar with the PSL and the way soccer partnerships work in South Africa is why the PSL gave up its name in favour of the new "Betway Premiership."
Here is a look at the league's previous title sponsorships:
To clarify, Betway Casino has not acquired the PSL, nor has the organisation given up any of its governing authority. The agreement is called title sponsorship, and it is a common practice for the soccer league to adopt the brand identity of the title sponsor.

The agreement and the promotional rebrand of the PSL to the Betway Premiership marks the beginning of an exciting time for local soccer fans, its sports stars, and the broader South African soccer industry.
The licensed online casino and betting provider is already a hands-on supporter of the Springboks and the South African T20 cricket league, where it has brought its experience in partnering with the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal, and other major sporting brands and leagues to bear on the local scene.
Michel confirms that Betway's insights and experience gained through local and international partnerships will “play a huge part in driving the PSL forward.”
While they have been keeping precisely what their plans for the upcoming season hold in store, soccer fans are hopeful for chances to engage with players and that Betway will focus on grassroots soccer programs, which have proven to be a vital channel for providing local youth with the tools and opportunities they need to achieve their goals.
